Craig Harrison, a British Army sniper made 2. Not 1, but 2 kills with 2 shots at a distance of 8,120 feet. That’s 2707 yards, 2475 meters, or 1.54 miles!!!! He did it with a .338 Lapua Magnum Accuracy International L115A3 sniper rifle. I believe the optics that AI provides to the British military is the Schmidt & Bender 5-25×56. Also, the A3 typically comes with a suppressor. I have no idea what optics were actually on the rifle, or if the suppressor was being used, but wow. I don’t care what optics he was using. This guy rocks! The previous record was set by a Canadian sniper at and equally impressive 7,972 feet. However, he was using a McMillan Tac-50 .50 BMG bolt action rifle. Now that distance is amazing regardless of the rifle being used. However, the .50 BMG has about twice the muzzle energy of the .338 LM round that was used for this new record setting shot.
And just for good measure. here is a shot of the L115A3 as supplied to the British military (be sure to click for larger as always):
And here is a shot of the previous record holder from 2002:
I almost forgot to mention another reason he is a super stud. Not only was Craig Harrison shot in the head on a previous tour of duty. Don’t worry, the shot just somehow magically entered his helmet then exited right back out. But he also had both arms broken due to a road side bomb attempting to blow his ass up. So what does he do? He gets better and comes back to kick some ass. And manages to set a record in the process. Too bad they don’t have a medal specifically for that. If they did, I am sure it would look like Chuck Norris’ fist with a couple big balls hanging from it.
